about

Reynardine Trad. Arr. Poitín
A lovely old ballad telling the story of a mountainside meeting between a fair maid and a vulpecular gentleman. Learned from the singing of Archie Fisher. In our version we’ve added a chorus and Jeremy is accompanied by the dulcet tones of Saša.

Půvabná stará balada vypráví příběh o setkání něžné dívky a lišáckého gentlemana na horském úbočí. V této verzi inspirované nápěvem Archieho Fishera jsme přidali refrén a Jeremyho zpěv zde doprovází Sašin libý hlas.

lyrics

Reynardine

One evening as I rambled, all on the springing thyme,
I overheard a young woman converse with Reynardine
Her hair was black and her eyes were blue, her lips were red like wine
and he smiled as he gazed upon them, that sly bold Reynardine
That sly bold Reynardine, that sly bold Reynardine,
and he smiled as he gazed upon them, that sly bold Reynardine

She says, ‘Kind sir, be civil, my company forsake,
for to my good opinion I fear you are a rake’
‘Oh no,’ says he, ‘I am no rake, brought up in Venus’ train,
but I’m searching for concealment, all from the judge’s men’
All from the judge’s men, all from the judge’s men,
‘I’m searching for concealment, from the judge’s men’

Her cherry cheeks, her ruby lips, they lost their former dye,
and she fainted there all in his arms, all on the mountainside
He kissed her once, he kissed her twice, till she came to again,
and modestly she asked him, ‘Pray, tell to me your name’
Pray, tell to me your name, oh pray, tell to me your name,
and modestly she asked him, pray, tell to me your name

If by chance you look for me, perhaps you’ll not me find,
but I’ll be in my castle green, enquire for Reynardine
So day and night she’s followed him, so bright his teeth did shine,
and he’s led her over the mountain, that sly bold Reynardine
That sly bold Reynardine, that sly bold Reynardine,
and he’s led her over the mountain, that sly bold Reynardine

They explore all forms of Celtic music but are firmly grounded in the pub session tradition and like nothing better than sitting round a table in the corner of a cosy pub playing old favourites about tarry sailors, merry maids and drunken nights.
