about

The Cotton Mill Trad. Arr. Poitín

This originally Irish song has been Sussex-ified and in our version the young couple stroll along the Downs instead of the dam. Also sung by Tommy Makem and Patrick Street.

Tato původně irská píseň získala drobnou sussexskou úpravu, takže v naší verzi se mladý pár neprochází podél hráze, nýbrž po holých zelených kopečkách typické krajiny jižní Anglie. Píseň je také známa pod názvem „The Pride of the Springfield Road“ v podání Patrick Street a Tommyho Makema.

lyrics

The Cotton Mill

I took my lover for a walk in the merry month of May,
The birds were singing sweetly as we went along our way
She said she loved me dearly, to me she would be true,
If you will stay with me my love, then I will stay with you

We strolled along the Downs, the birds sang loud and gay,
‘Twas there I met my pretty brunette and she stole my heart away,
Her lips they were like roses red, her skin as white as snow,
She was the darling of my heart and the pride of the Springfield Road

Now we’ll be getting married, for she has named the day,
And happy we’ll together be as we go along our way
I’ll find a tidy little house with a garden for to till,
We’ll bring our children up like us, to work in the cotton mill

We strolled along the Downs, the birds sang loud and gay,
‘Twas there I met my pretty brunette and she stole my heart away,
Her lips they were like roses red, her skin as white as snow,
She was the darling of my heart and the pride of the Springfield Road

I’ll bid youse all good evening for now I must away,
I’m off to meet her parents to hear what they will say
She said they’ll treat me kindly and glasses they will fill,
And drink a toast to the bride and the groom who work in the cotton mill

We strolled along the Downs, the birds sang loud and gay,
‘Twas there I met my pretty brunette and she stole my heart away,
Her lips they were like roses red, her skin as white as snow,
She was the darling of my heart and the pride of the Springfield Road
